The Jackie Robinson Awards Gala took place Monday, March 5th; Nicole Beharie was present along with some of the cast of the film 42, directed by Brian Helgeland. 42 is a film biopic of baseball icon Jackie Robinson, played by Chadwick Boseman (pictured with Beharie above). Beharie will star as Robinson's real life wife Rachel Robinson.

Now that I see Mrs Robinson and Nicole side-by-side, I have to agree Nicole was a good casting choice! They're both petite, good looking, plus they seem to have similar mannerisms...look at the hand placement in the pic below. :)

The film, which also stars Harrison Ford in the role of Branch Rickey, is in pre-production and set to be released next year.

Here are images from the event in which she's pictured with Chadwick Boseman, Rachel Robinson and the cast...I love this classy and demure look...less is more and Nicole is a perfect example of that. She's gorgeous without trying too hard.
Nicole Beharie was a guest star this past Wednesday 2/29 in this latest episode of Law & Order SVU: Child's Welfare. I unfortunately missed it when it aired; however it surfaced online the next day.

Beharie plays Tracy, a mother of two children, and the fiance of Simon, who is Olivia's estranged brother. Simon and Tracy's children are taken away from them by child's services. Simon reaches out to his sister and her team to fight the case.

I wish there was more Beharie in this episode, although I did enjoy her presence as usual. I love that the show's producers kept her beautiful hair au naturale.
After all the anticipation and media coverage, I was able to FINALLY catch Steve McQueen's Shame co-starring the lovely Nicole Beharie last night.

If you're not aware by now of what this film is about; here it goes...Brandon is a handsome, and almost disturbingly meticulous man who holds a successful job in NYC; but he is an unhappy sex addict who avoids intimacy at all costs, opting for meaningless sex instead. His life revolves around porn, masturbation and prostitutes. The film begins to unravel once his love-starved and troubled sister shows up at his place unannounced after he ignores her countless phone calls and voicemails.

There has been a lot of talk about the copious amounts of sex in the film, but most of all, about Michael Fassbender's full frontal in the film. It is rated NC-17. Fassbender's penis is shown in passing. It isn't a close up. He is seen urinating. It isn't shocking. It hardly gives off the unnerving/creepy vibe in same vein as Harvey Keitel's full frontal in Bad Lieutenant. What you've heard about the sex scenes not being titillating; it's true. You won't get aroused.

Nicole Beharie's character Marianne works with Brandon at his office. He is attracted to her and opts to take her out on a date, which is awkward, comic and the only time we see Brandon really trying to overcome his demons in order to make a connection with this beautiful and intelligent woman. After the innocent date, Brandon sees a chance to begin a real relationship and throws away his "porn stash." In the next scene, we see him approach Marianne at the office to whisk her away to consummate their relationship.

The scene in which Brandon and her character begin foreplay at the Standard Hotel in NYC is very very realistic; It is soo well acted. It really felt like true artistic expression. It is so very honest and almost awkward given Brandon's internal turmoil at the same time. Nicole Beharie's Marianne is tender, bashful and erotic all at once. The scene isn't gratuitous at all. She is so beautifully brave, touching and real. It is one of the best love scenes ever to be recalled, and not for its titillating factor, if that makes sense. Plus, it was absolutely necessary in order to witness Brandon's aversion to real intimacy and affection.

Also very impressive and enjoyable was the chemistry between Brandon and his desperate night club singer sister Sissy, played by Carey Mulligan (I didn't get the hoopla about her nude scene whatsoever; it shouldn't be considered a "full-frontal." We see her nude briefly from a side angle shot when Brandon finds her in the shower). She is amazing in her portrayal of an emotionally unstable, quirky sister with suicidal tendencies.

Why are these siblings so damaged? The film leaves that and more to the audience to decipher. Having read the script, I wish some of the dialogue between the siblings would have made it to the screen, but it really doesn't take away from the effect of the film in general. There was much criticism about the so-called heavy-handed nature and predictability of the film's ending; which is actually poignant, dramatic and brilliantly climactic.

Most will leave the theater shocked, not because of the sex, but because of the self-destructive nature of its afflicted main character. The acting, direction, photography are masterful all around. The film is more of a character study and no, it's not for every audience. Some may be baffled by the long takes, it's unlikely hero, and lack of dialogue. The film stays with you, and the more it sinks into your psyche, the more its appreciation.

Beharie should have been shown in at least one extra scene after their "unsuccessful" hotel encounter. It will really leave you wanting to see more of her. That may be a good thing though. She should be considered for more substantive, or better yet, lead roles, where she can really get to showcase her amazing talent and magnetic screen presence.

Hopefully, Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan won't get robbed of nominations for Academy Awards next year. Steve McQueen will most likely be ignored from a well-deserved directing nod, since he hasn't been considered so far at the major awards this season, which is really a Shame.Vanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17610861347493350344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6763398989038518968.post-11619053957209161962011-11-26T17:47:00.000-08:002011-11-27T10:24:02.423-08:00Pics & Video: Nicole Beharie in Paris for "Shame" Premiere!

I hope you're watching The Good Wife on CBS Sundays at 9pm et. You can catch last night's episode HERE. Nicole Beharie debuted as Imani Morehouse and she was splendid! She totally owned it. :-)

Here's what some of the reviews are saying. Consensus is this was the best episode of this season so far, obviously ;-):

"Nicole Beharie, who plays Imani Morehouse, also costars with Michael Fassbender in Shame, which is coming out in December and which I saw at the Toronto Film Festival. She has an incredible sexiness about her, a way of sparring intellectually with cocky men that makes her a perfect Cary counterpart. Their chemistry was palpable from second one, and is enough to make anyone forget about the sorely missed Kelli Giddish, at least momentarily. (Kudos to Czuchry for that amazing attracted-nervous-suspicious laugh he did in response to Imani's first joke, "You're all under arrest.") And she's sexy in a way that makes Lisa Edelstein's grating Celeste seem downright vulgar with her frequent references to past sexual liaisons." NYMag

"A beautiful stranger in the room with Alicia and Cary as the robbery witness views the suspect lineup turns out to be a Justice Department attorney sent to make sure that the State's Attorney's Office has no racial bias in plea bargaining. Imani Stonehouse (Nicole Beharie) already is infinitely more interesting than Cary, not to mention nicer to look at." AfterEllen

"I’m also intrigued by Imani Morehouse, the (drop-dead gorgeous) new assistant U.S. attorney (and granddaughter of a fictional civil rights leader, obviously) assigned to be a sentencing watchdog at Peter’s office. Do I smell a romance between Cary and Imani? Why, yes, I think I do." LATimesBlogs

Did you expect to come here and see some awesome pictures of Nicole Beharie from the New York Film Fest Shame premiere and afterparty a few nights ago at the rooftop of "The Standard Hotel" in a fantastic cocktail dress??!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAHH! I'm sorry; I really, really wish I had some!! You can boo me right now, just like I want to boo all the press/paps that saw her at the festivities and didn't arrange to take her picture.

I don't get it! This is a critically acclaimed highly anticipated film, which will be pushed for Oscar consideration and where she plays the main romantic interest; I know the part is brief but still poignant, plus she's gorgeous and wonderful in the movie sooo....why isn't there more press about her?!

*Sigh* Don't mind me. ANYWAYS, I found this article at FilmExperience.net. Nathaniel R., a really nice writer from that site, just told me in the comment section that he spoke to Nicole at the afterparty. This is what he says in his story:

Nicole Beharie, on the other hand, who plays Fassy's would be girlfriend (and co-worker) in Shame didn't know what to expect at all. She had just seen her film for the first time that night. Turns out that she and Fassbender improvised a lot and since all three of her major scenes are actually single continuous shots (yay!), she had no idea which takes were chosen. I make a mental note to thank Steve McQueen for this as it is such an strangely rare treat to be able to watch two fine actors acting together rather than in their own disjointed closeups.

Of course she was amazing in the film. While we're at it, check out the NYFF review of Shame from IndieWIRE's Shadow and Act HERE.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6763398989038518968.post-55840411000449528762011-08-31T14:54:00.000-07:002011-10-08T11:36:26.412-07:00Nicole Beharie Interview with IndieWIRE's Shadow and Act!

I had the tremendous joy and pleasure of interviewing Nicole Beharie for IndieWIRE's Shadow and Act (I'm a proud contributing writer btw :)). We connected through FB and she agreed to a phone interview! We joked, we laughed and had interesting conversation. In the end, the experience was much more easygoing and satisfying than expected.

Read my interview story below.

Actress Nicole Beharie, 26, is a fan of Sci-Fi, especially Octavia Butler novels; which she wishes would be adapted to the screen. Beharie is “like in love” with Whoopi Goldberg, and she’s also fervent in professing the respect and admiration for the performances of Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer in the controversial film The Help, in theaters now. Would she like to eventually follow the footsteps of Viola Davis and produce her own films? The answer of this wise beyond-her-years talented actor was the most certain and resounding one of this nonetheless candid phone interview, which lasted over an hour, “DEFINITELY, definitely.”

As soon as Nicole sent me a text message, saying that she would be calling me in five minutes, right after getting her tea and reserving a spot at a busy café, I realized this was a surreal moment for me. I have been following her career upon seeing her magnificent performance in 2008’s American Violet. Besides her striking looks, the graceful and delicate Juilliard graduate, portrayed an ordinary woman with an unprecedented fortitude, maturity and intelligence not commonly seen on the screen. I knew at that moment she was an important talent to watch.
She then continued to carve her own path, selecting projects that spoke to her artistry and showed her dynamic acting range: an angry and resentful daughter with a nervous condition in Lifetime’s Sins of the Mother, a down and out singer who falls in love in My Last Day Without You, the love interest of an afflicted sex-addict in Steve McQueen‘sShame (opposite Michael Fassbender), a bipolar and secluded woman involved in an online affair in Small of Her Back, a slave country wife anxious to explore the world in Broadway’s A Free Man of Color, the high school sweetheart of an ex-football player in Matthew Cherry’s The Last Fall and a member of a community searching for a couple’s missing daughter in T.D. Jakes’ On the Seventh Day. She will also be seen this fall, in a guest spot playing an attorney for CBS’ critically acclaimed hit show The Good Wife, which premieres this September 25th at 10pm et.
VM: Steve McQueen’s Shame is a highly anticipated film screening at Venice Film Fest this month and at Toronto next month; how did you get involved with the project? Did you audition?
NB: I was doing A Free Man of Color at the time, and it was a crazy work schedule with all the shows. I didn’t have time to go to the audition. He [McQueen] was looking for people, and he’s like really hands on. He contacted my agent to arrange the audition, they were like, “why is she standing you up?” But I wasn’t; I meant to go in but our schedules kept changing. It’s kind of strange; I think it peaked his interest by me being unavailable [laughs]. I ended up meeting with Steve to talk about the character. I think he was a little upset; in a way reprimanded me for having missed my audition [chuckles].
Then I put myself on tape and that was the end of it, not that I thought I had the part by no means, but after meeting with Steve, I knew this project was going to be special, as far as what he had in mind and his style of work, which he’s willing to play with and change to allow the actors to define their roles was something I needed to experience. Whatever people read on the script is not necessarily what the film is going to be. For example, there’s a scene that’s almost eight pages of dialogue that we ended up improvising, so I’m very interested in seeing the film myself.
VM: How was working with Steve McQueen?
NB: It was amazing. He allowed me to relax and not be so self-aware; not worry about how I’m looking. He was like “do you.” He thinks along the grain of how I like to think. He was great to work for and him being a visual artist, especially a black artist, and us sharing some in depth conversations about that; I’m forever indebted to him.
VM: How was working with Michael Fassbender?
NB: He’s a riot. Very intelligent, fearless, playful. We were shooting a scene back in February or March; it was freezing raining, we were walking down East Village over and over again, and it was so much fun to enjoy the person you’re working with. He made some of the uncomfortable scenes easier. I’m just glad I worked with the guy. He’s blowing up and for a good reason!
VM: Obviously, Shame is a sexually charged drama overall. Did you have any doubts going in?
NB: If you’ve watched Hunger [Steve McQueen’s directing debut], there’s a lot of nudity in that, and it’s for a reason. This film is about something taboo [sex addiction]. I have gotten reactions from my family and other people who have an idea of who I am as an artist, and they’re like “I can’t believe you’re doing something like that,” and I’m like “well, you see music videos and you get more than enough,” and here you have a story about something that’s really talking about where addiction lives and things that go on everyday right underneath our noses and there’s a big problem with that. For everyone involved in the film, it was pretty much about everything else going on besides that.
VM: What can you say about your character Beth Hutchins in T.D. Jakes’ On the Seventh Day?
NB: My character is a professional woman and she’s part of the support system in the community, who helps a couple find their missing daughter. It’s an uplifting story, but it also forces you to look at secrets. I can’t give too much away, but there’s a lot of twists and turns in the story.
VM: How hard is it to find work? Are you getting offers?
NB: I’m auditioning. You may audition for something a month ago, you don’t hear anything and then they call you. I have been getting a few offers here and there. The problem with that is, if you have an idea of the character that is different from whatever they thought you were like. I show up sometimes, and they expect me to be the girl from American Violet in real life [laughs]. I show up and I’m 5’1” and kind of shy.
VM: What can you say about S&A’s topic about the “Burden of Representation” for black actors?
NB: I think there are all kinds of representation. As artists, you can’t box yourself in. Like Christian Bale gets to do the coolest things; I think the other side of that, is to limit ourselves because we have this ‘compensating middle class thing,’ and we have to be like, perfect. There are expectations in how you play your character as a black woman, to be sassy and the same kind of feel, as if there are no quirky black women. I struggle with those things constantly, trying to add dimension to my work and that’s the goal too.
There’s so many things that I’ve read that I’m just like “naahh.” I have certain socio-political ideals that won’t allow me to do certain things [chuckles]. I’m going to have to watch my sun and my mercurial spirit. But yah, I don’t want my mother or grandmother to be embarrassed by anything that I do.
VM: What can you say about The Help film?
NB: People criticize Viola Davis because she was in it, but, she was amazing. The actress is amazing. I have a lot of respect for her and Octavia Spencer; she was wonderful. There were moments where I was moved. I enjoyed certain parts and that’s all I’ll say about that. Everything about us black people is complicated, us being here, being a minority, being a woman, all those things are complicated.
VM: Any other projects on the horizon??
NB: I usually don’t say anything until the contract is signed; I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I’m trying to make moves and keep things going.
VM: Would you get involved in a film set in a historical period during slavery?
NB: yeah, I’m not averse to that. It’s part of my history. You have to be sensitive with they way it’s done. I feel like we’ve done a lot of the same things and there’s other ground to cover. So yeah, if the script is good, I’m not like “no slavery ever!”
VM: How do you feel about becoming a so-called “celebrity” or “it girl”? Are you scared/interested in getting exposure in that regard?
NB: Ultimately, anyone that is doing something they enjoy, wants to have more opportunities. I think everything is always changing and fluctuating when it comes to the concept of “it” girl. I don’t see that for myself. I think you have to go to parties and do all that kind of stuff. I love what I do, and I’m constantly negotiating what it means to do this, and working with different people, and it’s been my dream for a minute. I plan on being here for a while, not necessarily to be a superstar.
I’ve been fortunate to work with Alfre Woodard and Jeffrey Wright; people who are artists, have careers, longevity and full lives. That looks good to me. I’m figuring out how to do this still. There are people I watch like Penelope Cruz; you look at her early work and look at her now. I want to grow man! That’s the goal. I want to get there, learning new things. But, you know, whatever God has for me in his plan, and God willing, I’ll be working [laughs].Vanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17610861347493350344noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6763398989038518968.post-8513028129117272562011-07-22T18:42:00.000-07:002011-10-25T17:48:14.331-07:00More Pics of Nicole From the Set of "The Last Fall"

John Guare's play A Free Man of Color ran from October 2010 until January 2011 at the Lincoln Center in NYC. I was glad to catch the play back in November and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nicole Beharie played Margery, the slave country wife to the half-brother of the main character, Jacques Cornet, played by the wondrous Jeffrey Wright.

If interested, scroll down to the bottom of this post to see a video with actor interviews, clips from the play along with a few audience reviews. Besides being shown in a few clips from the play, Nicole is not featured in any of the interviews. You can catch a 'glimpse' of her in the background around the 2:18 mark. :-)

Nicole shared some thoughts about the experience of working in the play in this interview by Bridget Bland of BlackVoices. Here are some excerpts:

BlackVoices.com: This is your first Broadway role. Were you nervous about making this transition from film?
Nicole Beharie: Extremely nervous and honored, and like everyday, I thought, "They're gonna fire me" (laughs). Just playing. I'd think, "I can't believe I'm in this room," but, Broadway is a big thing. It's like your dream, and I went to Juilliard right across the street from Lincoln Center and every day I go to work, I also pass my alma mater and it just brings me back.

BV: Is there any downside to this hectic schedule?
NB: You're on Broadway with cool people. It's like, yeah we do eight shows a week. We're doing a show on Christmas day, but we're telling a great story and audiences will be there and I just wouldn't fit in at a desk.

BV: If you weren't acting what would you be doing?
NB: I'd have a farm. I am into herbs and growing things and the cycles of the moon and maybe it's just a kick I'm on. I have my little windowpane herb garden and in the summer, I have my rooftop to make tomato and basil and make it happen. It all dies in the winter, honey.

BV: What have you learned doing 'A Free Man of Color?'
NB: Generosity and vulnerability, comedy and wit from of all these people. I've learned things from George, our director. There are so many things that I've learned. It's just an experience that will forever be with me. The history of the play itself is a really important story to be told beyond my career. I think it is important it's being told right now and at this time with the political climate and [President] Barack Obama.

BV: How's it been working with Jeffrey Wright and Mos Def?
NB: They have incredible skill and craftsmanship and they are extremely generous and there's no ego. They make it easy to jump in and play with them, and Jeffrey in the beginning could see I was nervous and would tell me to relax, especially because we have a scene where we roll around in the bed, and I was really nervous about it. But he was totally professional like, 'Child, this is easy, we can do it.' And he made it a lot of fun.

Following up on this post, Nicole is simultaneously filming 2 movies this month! Now we know what the other film is...

Nicole Beharie will star alongside Blair Underwood, Sharon Leal, Pam Grier and Jacqueline Fleming in the film "On the Seventh Day." The film is directed by Neema Barnette and produced by Jeff Clanagan for Codeblack Entertainment and Nina Henderson Moore.

Bishop T.D. Jakes (Woman Thou Art Loose) is the writer and executive producer. The film will be entirely shot in New Orleans. It is said to be a dramatic sequel to Jakes' 2004 film "Woman Thou Art Loose".

According to the film's press release:

"This independent film takes its audience on a seven day journey inside the souls and secrets of a husband and wife, Kari and David Ames as they search for redemption, truth and faith while on a race to find their missing daughter. The film uses the eerie, yet peaceful and beautiful scenery of Louisiana’s bayous and the cities unique culture to depict a story that everyone can relate to, a story of a couples transformation, strength and conviction."

Nicole will play Beth Hutchens. Although, I do not know what her character entails, we do know that Blair Underwood and Sharon Leal will play the couple David and Kari Ames. Pam Grier will play a police detective.

I found another piece of information from this Jacqueline Fleming interview with Matt J. Horn in his blog. She is part of the cast and she gave a tad more insight into the story:

"This year has been very good to me! I am currently in production on a new TD Jakes film “On the Seventh Day”. I have a starring role alongside Blair Underwood, Pam Grier, and Sharon Leal. It’s being shot entirely in New Orleans. The story involves the kidnapping of a little girl and the secrets that are revealed about her parents and the other adults during the search to find her. The message in this movie will have an impact of biblical proportions. It is expected to be released in Nov/Dec 2011."

Good to know they plan to release it at the end of this year!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6763398989038518968.post-25080271067398702462011-07-19T10:06:00.000-07:002011-07-19T19:25:52.215-07:00"My Last Day Without You" Theater Release in German-Speaking Territories This Fall

I don't have any information on AMERICAN distribution yet.. I'm wondering which festival the film will screen next. I will provide updates as soon as I find out.
While I do not know which project it is, I do know Spike Lee started filming Red Hook Summer this week in Brooklyn. Could that be it?? Although, that film is said to be low-budget, so I'm not sure they'd be paying her that much.

That's just me speculating... hmmm

Anyhow, here's the part of her blog regarding that situation:

"PHONE CALL 7
Our lead actress just booked another film that is paying her way more than we are, in fact her pay is more than our whole budget for the film! LOL!
She has a schedule conflict and we have to split her shoot days so she can fly out for 3 days to film this other project.

What does this mean? Means we have to get our AD on this ASAP and try to get her to rearrange some things. We have to call our casting director and see how this will affect other actor's schedules and their already existing shooting conflicts and make sure this doesn't ADD additional shoot days to anyone's schedule so we don't have to pay more. We have to call locations and see what we can rearrange and hopefully change our days around.

All this while walking into the SAG office dropping off paperwork, waiting for them to review, telling us what the bond amount is, running up to the bank before they close (it's around 4:30pm).

PS they want us to tell them something asap! The other production company will fly her out of LA to do their project and fly her back in to finish ours.
Now, do we split up this package deal we found for hotel and car or do we just let it be continuous days still and have them reimburse us for the 3 days that she won't be there in her hotel room and using the car??
They say they will call us back and let us know *sigh*

4:45 pm, run upstairs to SAG and drop off bond money to our SAG rep."

Here are a couple of pictures from the first week of shooting of Matthew Cherry's The Last Fall, in which she plays the love interest, Faith Davis.

Back in November of last year, Indiewire posted a film profile by director Russell Sharman on "Small of Her Back" in a portion of THIS article. Sharman gave some insight into the film's story, its main characters and Nicole's performance.

According to Sharman, "Nicole Beharie, the female lead, brought an incredible energy to the character of Piper, a very challenging role. She’s both off-balance and completely in control, and Nicole never allowed the character to slip into a cliche of mental illness."

As reported in THIS previous post, the director hopes to premiere the small budget indie flick at the Sundance Film Festival next year.

Here's the complete part of that article regarding the film:

Logline: A suicidal shut-in. A man at her door. And neither are who they seem.
Production team: Writer/Director: Russell Leigh Sharman; Producer: Cheryl Harris Sharman; Director of Photography: Noah Yuan-Vogel; Editor: Eric Balgley; Production Designer: Brandon Giles
About the film: “‘Small of Her Back’ is based on a play, produced in New York in 2008. As a screenwriter working in the Hollywood studio system, I was constantly frustrated by the glacier pace of development. This project was born, in part, out of that frustration, and really began as a very small scale, experimental production of a piece that had proven itself on the stage. But enough talented people were inspired by the script to make it a much more involved, and ultimately more satisfying, project. Nicole Beharie, the female lead, brought an incredible energy to the character of Piper, a very challenging role. She’s both off-balance and completely in control, and Nicole never allowed the character to slip into a cliche of mental illness. And Chris Domig brought such a grounded, compassionate performance to a character that, in the end, is, well, less than sympathetic. Of course, they were supported by a talented, if tiny, crew crammed into a one-bedroom apartment for 10 days. Add 4 days of exteriors, and it was a whirlwind shooting schedule on shoestring budget. So far, the results are stunning. The film is coming together as a compelling, contained thriller - a kind of dark romance - that will keep folks on the edge of their seats despite being crammed in that little apartment all night with our two main characters.”—Russell Leigh Sharman
From South Carolina Governor’s School to JuilliardThe following article was written by Tim Driggers back in 2006. She is referred to as NICOLE BROWNE. She switched her last name to Beharie to distinguish herself professionally from TV's 'Rhyon Nicole Brown'.

It talks about Nicole's journey along with Stacy Scott and Teyonah Parris from the South Carolina Governor's School to Juilliard in NYC.
To recap, Nicole plays Fassbender's love interest in the film, but his character is unable to form an intimate connection with her because of his sex addiction.
Exciting stuff as you can imagine! I have read very positive reviews scattered throughout the web. The latest comes from the IMDB discussion for Shame. User ahmedw-bakhsh posted a thread titled 'Phenomenal'. He apparently caught the film at a buyers screening in Cannes. The film was a rough cut without the music and opening/closing credits. Going by this review, the film looks to be very promising! :-)
What a movie! Great acting, great writing, great directing! I loved it. It's marginally better than Hunger in the sense that it completely relies on the chemistry between the two leads, Michael and Carey, and they both totally deliver. Heartbreaking, harrowing, and shocking. A completely new side to Michael. He's still the charismatic, cool, confident lead (during most of the movie) but towards the end, he unravels into this fragile, vulnerable, broken shell of the man he pretends he is, and it is completely mesmerizing to watch.
Also, don't worry, there is a back story here, a purpose as to why the characters do what they do.
I have to say, though, I was surprised by how much nudity was in the movie. It doesn't take away from the plot, though, and this time, it really is essential to the story.
The movie was not what I expected, and I'm glad.
Just a sidenote, Carey isn't in it as much as I thought she would be.

He also added in another post:

It was hard to tell what people thought of it, since it's the kind of movie that, when it ends, you just sit there for a moment taking it all in. But I heard that the reception was positive.

I sent him a pm about Nicole's role and her nudity/sex scene in the film. He says she is not nude and the sex scene is very brief. Not that she should be chastasised if she was indeed nude, however, some will try to especially when it comes to the interracial element of this already sexually charged drama.

Since it is premiering at the Venice Film Festival at the end of August of this year, you can expect a trailer very soon or at least some interesting film stills. I will post as soon as any of it becomes available.
'My Last Day Without You' received some positive reviews from a few who attended the screenings at the Brooklyn Film Festival last weekend. The film also garnered a "Best Producer" award at the festival. Check out the review from Kia Barbee posted HERE via Indiwire's Shadow and Act. Judging by this particular review, the movie doesn't seem to be your average run of the mill rom-com but more of a fresh, sweet, witty and rather unpredictable romantic story. I will post any U.S. distribution information and release dates when I find out!

Below is the review posted by Tas Tobey of Antenna Magazine Online. You can click HERE for the article.

On Saturday night, The Brooklyn Film Festival hosted the world premiere of My Last Day Without You, a feature film in the 2011 festival line-up. Starring Nicole Beharie and Ken Duken, with masterful direction by Stefan Shchaefer, this film captures the true essence of a “chance encounter” romance.

Set in Brooklyn, the film begins with Niklas, a young german executive visiting for the day on important business. After a chance meeting with Leticia, a beautiful African-American secretary and aspiring singer and songwriter, he instantly falls in love. The two proceed to spend the entire day with one another, and after what seems like a beautiful strike of fate, it is revealed that Niklas is in fact the very person who was sent to lay-off the entire branch of the company Leticia works for. From this point on the story spirals into a whirlwind of self-discovery, violence, and compassion. Winning the award for “Best Producers” at this years Brooklyn Film Festival, this flick is far from your average chicky romance film and is truly a must-see for all. The film has received a distribution deal and will be available to the public in the coming weeks.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
